Introduction:
One of the key dates in the relationship between France and the USA is 1776 when Lafayette helped them during the Independence War.
Thomas Jefferson was one of the creators of Declaration of Independence after the war.
When France helped the USA they gave a lot of fire arms to the Americans.
Moreover to have a bigger territory, Americans bought Louisiana to France.
This relationship was based on sharing and cooperating.
Furthermore, during the two World Wars relations became stronger with solidarity and support of French troops by the Americans.
For example in France there are a lot of cemeteries where American soldiers are burried.
However, these two countries are not only linked by History.
Indeed, we can also feel these influences thanks to musical cultures, some sports, food and objects from America like chewing gum, tights…
At the same time, French culture also influences America with luxury and more common items like bread, champagne etc.
To conclude since September 2010, a partnership between Lycée Roosevelt in Rheims and Thomas Jefferson for Science and Technology High School in Alexandria (Virginia) has been created.
It gives a more physical dimension to these exchanges to the students of the two high schools.
They feel more implicated and concerned by this relationship because it enables them to improve their skills in language, to share their cultures and customs.
Our common goal is to break the stereotypes linked to each country and help us become better citizens of the world.
We enjoyed discovering things about the links between our two countries, we hope you will enjoy reading our blog about it.

About: Jefferson's Time
RépondreSupprimerI think Jefferson is the perfect figure to represent the Franco-American alliance. Jefferson was thought of as America's first Francophile. Also, our high school is named after him!
Jefferson borrowed a lot of French philosophy and culture and brought it to America. His home, Monticello, is filled with French Influence. When I visited Monticello, I noticed that one of the books from his library that has been preserved from his time is by Voltaire!
Our school is named after Jefferson, so it's really interesting to see how he was so involved in French culture!
My favorite portion of the project was FDR. When Americans think about the connection between France and The United States, often we think of Thomas Jefferson, but not FDR. It was nice to learn about another president that was committed to working with France. I also liked that the presentation had information pertaining to his life as a whole, which helps us imagine him as a person and not just a military strategist.
RépondreSupprimerAs for Jefferson's Time, I agree with Mallika that his amount of assimilation of french culture is impressive. His french book collection was magnificent for the time, as was the amount of money he spent on good french wine!
